When electricity repeatedly trips in your home, a circuit breaker or safety device is usually detecting a potentially unsafe condition and disconnecting the supply.
Resetting it repeatedly without identifying the cause may expose your home to electrical damage, shock or fire risk.
Common Reasons Electricity Keeps Tripping
1. Too Many Appliances on One Circuit
Running several high-power appliances from the same circuit can create an overload.
This may happen when kettles, microwaves, water heaters, air conditioners or other appliances operate simultaneously—particularly when connected through one extension lead or socket.
Avoid connecting too many appliances to one power source or overloading extension cords.
2. A Faulty Appliance
An appliance with damaged wiring, moisture exposure or an internal electrical fault can cause the safety device to trip when the appliance is switched on.
Common suspects include:
- Water heaters
- Refrigerators
- Washing machines
- Kettles
- Irons
- Air conditioners
- Extension leads
If the electricity trips whenever one particular appliance operates, stop using that appliance until it has been inspected.
3. Electrical Leakage
A Residual Current Circuit Breaker helps disconnect electricity when current leaks toward earth.
Leakage can result from damaged appliances, deteriorated wiring, moisture or installation faults. According to Tenaga Nasional Berhad, an ELCB that trips again after being switched back on may indicate equipment or installation damage requiring inspection by a registered contractor.
4. Short Circuit
A short circuit may occur when electrical conductors make contact incorrectly. It can cause immediate tripping and may be accompanied by:
- A burning smell
- Sparks
- Discoloured sockets
- Buzzing sounds
- Heat around a switch or socket
Do not continue resetting the breaker when any of these warning signs are present.
5. Damaged or Deteriorating Wiring
Loose connections, damaged insulation, ageing cables and previous unqualified electrical work can create intermittent faults.
The problem may appear only during rain, when a specific light is switched on or when wiring becomes warm under load.
What Can You Check Safely?
You may:
- Switch off and unplug portable appliances.
- Check whether one appliance appears to trigger the problem.
- Look for visible damage, moisture or burning smells without removing covers.
- Stop using the affected appliance or circuit.
- Record when the trip occurs and which appliances were operating.
Do not touch exposed wiring, remove the distribution-board cover or attempt additional wiring yourself.
Malaysia’s Energy Commission advises consumers to use approved protection devices and engage an electrical contractor registered with the Commission for wiring repairs or additional work.
When Should You Call an Electrician?
Arrange an inspection when:
- The breaker will not remain switched on
- The fault keeps returning
- You smell burning
- A socket, switch or cable feels unusually hot
- You see sparks or discolouration
- The problem started after water exposure
- Several circuits are affected
- You cannot identify the appliance causing the fault
